Memento glass products are, in fact, handcrafted from colored glass paste using traditional glassblowing techniques. The color is not applied to the surface; it is not a paint finish nor an external coating, but is part of the glass’s body. For this reason, variations in color intensity—especially around the base and on the lower part of the glass—are due to the natural distribution of the glass paste during the manufacturing process. Several factors come into play: from the thickness of the glass to the concentration of microbubbles, the density of the material, the shape it takes on during the blowing process, and even the way light passes through the glass.

Another distinctive feature of this craft involves the use of soda in the glass batch and in the creation of the microbubble effect. During the artisanal manufacturing process, the presence and distribution of the Bollicine are never perfectly uniform: in the initial stage of production, the effect may be more intense and concentrated, while in the final part of the glass mass it may be less pronounced or distributed differently. This variation occurs within the glass mass itself and contributes to the subtle shades and optical effects visible on the glass.

In certain colors—particularly warmer ones, such as Red, for example—these variations may be more noticeable due to the color’s bright and partially translucent nature.

In lighter-colored or outwardly whiter glasses, the different shade does not indicate a lack of color, but rather a different concentration of the liquid and Bollicine inside the glass.

Glasses produced at different times, under different temperature conditions, and using different batches of glass paste (and thus different types of silica sand)—even with the same mixture—therefore yield different results in terms of color intensity, as well as a higher concentration of Bollicine toward the outer edge of this white hue. This clustering of Bollicine—even when “the ingredients are the same”—gives the impression of a lighter-colored glass, exactly as shown in the photo.

Sometimes, especially if we’re looking at glasses made at different times or even from different batches (and thus with different glass compositions), they can vary significantly from one another, sometimes creating unique shades—but that’s part of the beauty of Memento and what makes it so collectible.
